Shonen anime (Or How to create a shonen protagonist)

Wikipedia defines shonen anime/manga as “manga marketed to a male audience aged roughly 10 and up.Shonen manga is typically characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists”.

This post will focus on those male protagonists. Or How to create a perfect male protagonist for shonen anime.

Let’s take a look at some popular shonen protagonists.

Now for the one who started it all :

Notice some similarities?

Something else I forgot to mention, all of them are foodies. Not just your average eat-two-servings-instead-of-one foodies, but finish-up-entire-village-stocks-of-food-in-one-go foodies. Toriko , the anime, is based on a world where everything is food, so well, that was expected. Most of them act like idiots all the time, and they wear lots of orange, yellow and red, be it their hair or the costume.(Ichigo from Bleach might be the only exception to all these rules.)

So, to create the perfect protagonist :

• Give him a weird hairstyle(looking at you, Yu-Gi-Oh! )with preferably orange/yellow hair.
• Give him an orange/yellow/red costume with a hint of blue.
• Make him a foodie. If you forget this point, your anime is bound to fail.
• Give him an IQ of a monkey. Comedy is important.(Goku actually had a tail, and could (theoretically) turn into a huge monkey)
• And well, give him some latent super power. How else is he supposed to beat the bad guys?

And well, you’re done guys. Prepare to roll in money and fame now.

Disclaimer:It may seem like I don’t like shonen anime, but that is not the case. I love watching One piece, and watched Naruto before they deviated from the storyline and flooded the show with fillers. And who doesn’t love Dragon Ball Z. We grew up on that. 😀

I’m back!

Boo! Gotcha, didn’t I? No?

Well, umm okay. Moving on.

It’s been a long time since I last posted here. Blame could be divided equally between my laziness and the heavy workload my “institute” bestows upon us. I’ve got three proje  Fuck the projects. I will not talk about them.

Meh, enough depressive shit. I recently have started watching lot of anime(again) due to the fact that I have barely gone to college after mid semester exams. One of the gems that I discovered during the last month was Detroit Metal City (DMC). It is a 12 episode series with 13 min per episode.The really small episode length kind of encouraged me to watch the first episode( I find it hard to focus on stu..Oooo shiny). After watching the first episode, I finished this anime in one go 😀 . It is one of the most profane, stupid and hilarious anime I’ve watched. I don’t know why it isn’t mentioned more often in the anime subreddit. It is about a guy who is the front-man of an upcoming death metal band, but in reality, he is a very reserved and shy guy who wants to sing “fashionable pop music”. He tries to balance both his personalities, but sometimes, his stage persona , Krauser II takes over, and hilarity ensues. I particularly liked the actions of the devoted fans of DMC , and whenever that guy tries to balance both his personalities, but ends up giving in to the “terrorist from hell” inside him. I am not a huge fan of death metal, but I do like their single “Satsugai”. (extreme profanity, But, it’s in Japanese, so most of you will listen to the song blissfully unaware. Watch the anime for the subs.) This videos is from a live action movie based on the manga, so might be a little different. There might be some metaphors hidden about idol worship and dual personalities in the anime, but I watched this show just for the comedy.
Apart from DMC, I am currently also watching Psycho-pass, K and JoJo’s bizarre adventures from this season’s anime on air. Psycho-pass looks like a great action/sci-fi anime and has a great story line. Jojo’s.. is a very peculiar anime. It has some over the top action sequences, a very different visual style and frankly, I watch it for the lulz instead of the story. (“Ripple energy” is just funny to hear). I am still watching K because I started watching it. 😛

Also, updated the site theme and moved around stuff. Looks better now, I guess. Logging off hoping I’ll post again, this time , in less than a year.

2nd sem report

Aah, 2nd semester.

It was pretty eventful unlike the last semester( at least for me). It started off pretty well, with me bunking classes and lying around lazily in the campus lawns and basking in the warm winter sun 😀 . I found out that my brain works much much faster and in more sinister ways than one can imagine when I receive “dhoop”(sunlight) while lying in the lawns. Evenings were reserved for basketball , which was pretty fun.But, that is when tragedy struck. I fractured my right arm from 3 different places while playing bball. That was my first fracture and I was really scared, lying on the concrete floor of the basketball court. But I felt a bit weird/crazy too . I even asked my friend, “what will happen to the test of my humanities course tomorrow” 😛 . I knew I wouldn’t be giving any tests for quite some time. What I didn’t know then was that it would be ages before I’d be back to college. The guy who put on the temporary cast on my hand really scared the shit out of me when he said that I would have to be operated upon.It was all very new to me. I had never been admitted to a hospital. Well,the surgery went fine(hurray!!) and a titanium plate was put in my arm to support the bone(How awesome is that? xD. But sadly, the thing’s not magnetic or attracts magnets  .It would have been awesome to stick random metallic stuff/magnets on my arm) . 5 days and 17 stitches later, I was discharged from the hospital. And then began the most boring phase of my life. Just lying in bed all day long, and typing with only a single hand was a pain too. My anime collection surely came in handy at this time. And Cowboy bebop is an awesome series, along with FLCL and serial experiments lain. I was allowed to return to college after about 5 weeks (LONG time ) after missing my mid-sems (more on that later). Returning to college sure felt good, especially since everyone was pretty nice to me and my father dropped me and picked me up from college everyday 😀 . And the fact that I got to show off the huge stitches/scar I have on my arm now.People have
suggested I should get a tattoo made on it. I am still thinking about it.

Well, many other things happened too. I am one of the proud founders of our college’s music club. I also found a couple of unofficial clubs, namely the anime club and the downloads club. Anybody wishing to join the anime club is free to contact me.

My grades are in a real danger this time as I didn’t study anything at the time I was bed-ridden. And 2 days before the end-sems, it is all coming back to me. Well, dekha jayega ab toh. Aar ya par.(update: Par ho gya. I passed all the courses with pretty decent grades.hurray!)

I have rejoined the guitar classes, but the doc has said no to gymming. I have gained a lot of flab lying in the bed, eating chips and drinking soft drinks and watching movies/anime all the time(the anime/movie watching part doesn’t increase the flab though), and was thinking of joining a gym. But sadly, won’t be joining one now. Though I feel I need to(I once remarked to a shocked female, “I have a one-pack ab. Its called flab.”) Will try to get up early and go for a walk/jogging( God knows I can’t wake up early. I will try tomorrow though)

So, here ends a long post from me after a long time and again, hopefully, I will try to write more in these summers.

^ I just wish I could have had one of these.(preferably with a basketball on it. )

The Flying Hippo

Hi all, again 😛

I found my old sketchbook today.I had made this sketch a long time ago.When I saw it today, it kinda urged me to post it.It seemed perfect for the blog. P.S.-I believe in destiny now 😉 {You were meant to be here, my hippo}

I found a new way to pass my time. Trolling people on omegle.com.And believe me,  people are sometimes really stupid.Like today, I met someone “supposedly” from IIT Bombay.But clearly he had the mind of an eighth grader or even less *shudders*. I really want to post the conversation here but i believe it’s a family friendly blog.(plus I was laughing so hard that I forgot to save the conversation)

Because, almost 90% of the people I tried talking to, acted like a bunch of retards set free on a mike system.Anyways,I discovered this new time pass while preparing for my DM exam.I was “observing” the slides and the proofs on them, when I stumbled to a site which had some screenshots of people getting trolled on random chat sites.So, the beginning of a new “skill”.

That brings some faint memories back.Memories of the nightmares that were our mid-semester exams.Whew…5 exams in 3 days.Hell, they  were tough.But they are finally over.And, no more talking about the mid-sems now coz…

It’s my birthday today.Happy Birthday to me.yippeeeee 😀

Hi all!! 😀

Finally,I am starting my own blog partly after being encouraged(or should I say “bloooooh-ed”? ) by someone and partly because I have nothing else to do(although my mid-semester exams are almost here and I have got two projects on which I haven’t even started working yet).

So,this is the first post.I gotta tell something about me.I like programming and tech-stuff.I also like music,sleeping and my guitar. These days, I always feel kinda sleep-deprived .So, sleeping and *energy conservation*(being plain lazy) are top priorities these days .And, ummm…dunno.Read the next posts. You will get to know me.

Now about the new college. I finally got into a good college now .The atmosphere here is pretty nice and I feel like studying here( I know it’s kinda unbelievable,but its true).The faculty is also pretty amazing.Plus I think I have met some pretty awesome people here :).More on that later..

And I think I am becoming geekier by the day(college effect?).I wrote the first draft in vim editor!! 😛 Plus I couldn’t resist the urge when i saw “hello world” as the default heading.

Now something about this blog.The posts will be random, both in topic and frequency.I may blog about stuff ranging from programming to zombies and anything in between.It won’t be a programming or a tech blog only.Plus I will post whenever i feel like it.(remember I am *lazy*)So don’t expect me to stick to a schedule.

I just hope that I will post somewhat regularly here and try to keep this thing alive.It may feel nice to read it some years down the line .And btw, comments are always welcome 🙂
